Officers from the Darien Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of Mansfield Avenue and Fox Hill Lane in Darien shortly after 11 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 1, where there was a report of a motor vehicle crash.
Upon arrival, police said that the officers found a vehicle lying against a fence facing southbound, off the shoulder of the northbound lane. When they arrived, there were no occupants in the vehicle.
According to police, minutes later, a 16-year-old minor from New Canaan approached investigators and stated that he was the driver of the vehicle. The driver stated that he had been driving north on Mansfield Avenue behind a second vehicle, which allegedly made a sudden turn.
To avoid crashing into the vehicle, police said that the teen said that he lost control and struck the fence.
Police said the officers suspected the teen had consumed alcohol due to an odor coming from him, but initially stated he had not drank earlier in the night. The teenager later relented and stated that he had consumed three beers after failing multiple Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.
The teenager - whose name is not being released due to his age - was taken into custody and at Darien Police Headquarters, it was determined that his blood alcohol content was .166 percent, more than double the legal limit.
Following the breathalyzer, the teen was charged with operating a motor vehicle by a minor having an elevated blood alcohol content and he was cited for failing to drive right. He was released on $250 bail and scheduled to appear in court on Monday, Jan. 13.
